XXIIIth
International Waterbike Regatta (IWR), Genoa

23rd - 26th of May 2002

by: Leo de Vries

Behind the competitions

The International Waterbike Regatta is a yearly event that doesn't involve just waterbike competitions. And this is also why people love to come back every year. It's definitely one of the best events when it comes to combining sports, partying and meeting lots of nice people from different countries (used language is English). People that are interested in what boat you designed, what's so smart about it, which team players were involved, how long it took to realise the whole idea and... about what you eat for breakfast.

Besides the competition on the water, the IWR includes a complete arrangement. Starting from shaking hands at the arrival everything is taken care of. And the team from Genoa did well. In Genoa a biiiig party tent was the place to be for meals and fun.

Shall I give him a little more?

Quite a task, feeding 150 people hungry from the races.
Everybody was fed and looked after for. And when boats sunk... (noo!!!) the rescue team came into action.
(If somebody knows the team and name of the boat please send me a message. Until then this line remains.. so if you happen to know.. )

Most people from Northern Europe think Genoa has a wonderful weather from spring until autumn. This because it lays in Italy and because Genoa is very beautiful in the sunlight atmosphere. But it appears that Genoa isn't always as sunny. Therefore we were quite lucky with some beautiful weather (Dutchman, like me, always talk about the weather). After the heat of the races cooling down in the water was great.
Unfortunately the Azubi Power was severely damaged because people fell on it while jumping into the water. This was a very very sad moment. One lesson should be kept in mind: Behave properly when around boats!!!

This beautiful on the left hand side is Italian made. Yes! I am talking about the boat! But I can imagine some confusion. As you can see the side hulls are very slender. The idea behind it is to gain stabilizing without ' sticking' too much to the water and generate a minimum of wave resistance. This tri-maran boat is named Donatella.

I was able to catch the whole team while they all sat still. The team from Berlin, Germany, is very active, not only on the water but also on shore. Their own team mates are the major focus to drink a beer with and to fight with (of course everyone else is invited). They appear to have two "protein-carbohydrate-fat-reduction-engines".. (just two?) to produce their strong (but untrained) manpower. But that's not their only secret. They have an impressive controllable pitch propeller.

The Team from Zagreb and some organisers from the Genoa team. The nicely shaped boat behind is the TVRDI from Zagreb. TVRD means "hard" and TVRDI means "harder". It's a fiber reinforced plastic trimaran with paddle-wheels made from wood and aluminium:

And they took a whole bus with people from Berlin to the IWR. Amazing! So many supporters that like waterbikes!

The team from Athens, Greece, participated with their Anemos. If I am correct this is a new boat:

Trieste Waterbike Team had quite an impressive amount of team members. Please note that their boat, L' Ordegno, is laying behind:

And we were lucky King Neptune and his companions paid a visit to the IWR also. He baptized two waterbikers which was quite a ceremony.
